A quick guide to fountain fireworks

Ropework & Fountains Image

When you think of fireworks, the first one that is bound to spring to mind is the rocket. It may be the loudest, brightest type of firework, one that makes an instant impact, but it is far from being the most beautiful. This title could arguably be given to the fountain, an often overlooked firework that can actually be hugely visually impressive. In fact, no fireworks display is complete without at least one fountain.

What is a fountain?

A fountain is usually a ground based firework, which makes it a good choice if you want to add different heights to your display – and after all, it is variety that makes a fantastic fireworks display. Fountains start small, rising from the ground, but they can reach impressive heights as they rain down a column of sparks in a typical ‘fountain’ shape.

You can find fountains in a range of sizes, from small and sweet to impressively large, and you can also get ones which rain down sparks in all of your favourite colours. Most standard fireworks displays will have at least a handful of fountains – they are a much-loved classic that is always popular and never really goes out of fashion.

Conic fountains and gerbs

Now we’re talking! Conic fountains are known as the big fountains, because they can reach impressive heights and an amazing column of sparks. Starting slowly to build up some atmosphere in your display, conic fountains can build up to magnificent heights. If you really want to impress, why not use more than one conic fountain, placing them in a row and setting them off in sequence?

Gerbs are essentially professional versions of conic fountains that are capable of multiple effects (i.e. colours, crackles) and which start off at an impressive size rather than building up slowly like conic fountains. They can also be mounted on posts or at an angle, and they also have the added bonus of being able to change colour half-way through.

Multi-effect fountains

If you like your fireworks with all the bells and whistles money can buy, you can go for a multi-effect fountain. These fireworks offer a range of different effects in one, from crackles and other sound effect to colour and sparkles. You may not get as much height with these multi-tasking fireworks, as all the energy goes towards the sounds and colours, but you will get some exciting added effects.

Let’s add some sound!

Fountains tend to be quiet or even silent, which only amplifies their visual impact. However, you can get fireworks that crackle and make other kinds of noises. You should bear in mind though that a lot of the energy of a fountain is taken up in producing the sound, or other special effects, and if you want a truly beautiful, impressive fountain, it may be best to go for a simple, great quality firework instead.
